Garage Organization
One thing I never knew when we bought our first home with a garage was how much the kids would take over that space too. I remember thinking that there was no way we would be able to fill up a two-car garage with our stuff. I don’t like clutter and I had thought that garage organization would be easy. Flash forward a decade and we couldn’t even park our cars in the garage!
It is insane how much stuff a family can have over time. Granted my husband loves bikes so the garage has 10 – 12 bikes! A few of them belong to the kids and as they out grew bikes we kept them for when friends came over to play.
As the kids grew so did their equipment wants and needs. My husband and I believe in spending money on items that will keep them active versus fancy clothes for them. So there is an assortment of balls / scooters / nets / sticks / bats / the list is endless.
Now, I will take the blame for my outdoor pillow collection. I store them in the garage during the winter and on rainy days. It wasn’t until we cleared out the garage last week that I agreed with my hubby that I have way too many outdoor pillows. But, other than that, all I have are gardening supplies. Regardless, I had reached my breaking point and it was time to tackle my next project, garage organization.
Garage Organization
What I Used:
- Ultimate Track Storage Kit Pkg 10
- Multipurpose Track Hook Kit
- Heavy Duty Triple Storage Bin
- Heavy Duty Wall Storage
- Heavy Duty Golf / Sports Storage
What I Did:
As I shared in my other organization projects, like the Teen Closet Organization, the first step is to clear everything out. Literally to the bare bones. This wasn’t the most enjoyable part of the garage organization project. So I recruited my entire family. It took the five of us a couple hours to just get everything out of the garage onto the driveway. During the process I made a donation pile, garbage pile, and a curbside “free stuff” pile. For anyone to take.
Once the garage was cleared out I cleaned it from top to bottom. My garage is 100 years old so naturally, the interior brick deteriorates and creates a type of dust. I actually had to wear my “COVID-19” mask cause it was so dusty.
With it cleared out and clean I was able to rebuild. The Track Hook Kit and the Ultimate Track Storage Kit for the walls were extremely easy for me to install myself on the brick and mortar. Everything, including the Golf Storage Bin and Triple storage bin, is an easy DIY assembly that took a few minutes.
Creating A Designated Space
To help maintain the garage organization through the years I made sure to created designated spaces for everything.
- Garden Wall
- Sports Wall
- Bike Wall
- And then shelves in one corner for all my pillows
This has helped the kids too. They know that they have an entire area dedicated to their stuff and it makes cleanup of toys easier for all ages. Plus, they know to stay away from the garden wall with all the tools and garden equipment.
I must admit that the most exciting part is that it has been almost two weeks since my garage organization day and it has kept up!
