This past summer I have seen my boys grow up too fast. They act, say, do things that surprise me because I think they are still little. Then my oldest headed to middle school and got “real” homework for the first time in his life. He needed a space to not just do homework, but to hang out. A space (that he shares with his younger brother) that he can hang out with his friends or simply be alone when he needs to be. It was these boys of mine, growing up too fast, that made their room the next project to take on.
So, the entire look of the room was designed around a clock. I know, a clock. A few months ago the Regency Shop asked if I would like to demo their Nelson Clock. It was around this time that I saw the exact same clock on a kitchen wall in a T.V. show. Without hesitation I agreed knowing it would be perfect in my son’s bedroom. The color scheme was perfect and it would inspire me to build around it. To furnish a small office / homework space I turned to Cost Plus. Their home office collection is perfect for any space, it has a rustic feel that I knew would work great for my growing boys.
When designing a space I always try to start with one inspirational piece and the clock was it. I picked out three colors from the clock, black, slate, and gold or pine yellow. Using those colors I knew they would play a large role in picking out the furnishings. Keeping it rustic, manly, but warm and functional. Also, remember, my boys share a room, which means, 2 beds, 2 desks, 2 of everything. Hence, small space challenge. After staring at their room for a long while, I decided I would build their sleep and desk area on the largest wall, removing nightstands, their new desk would function as a night table and homework station. Knowing space was not my friend, I needed to find a desk first. Awhile back at Cost Plus World Market I saw a “small space” secretary desk. After checking measurement I knew it would be the perfect fit and style. Also, the kids have stuff, you know, like pokeman cards or random pieces of legos so they needed a side table or cabinet to store their “stuff.” I also couldn’t just buy one without a fight. So, when I found the vintage metal cabinet with 6 drawers I knew they could split the drawers. Three drawers for each. They loved that idea. Everything evenly shared. No fights.

Well, the pieces have started to arrive and come together. They have loved being a part of the process and helping me open, put together, and place the items. Gaining ownership is my hope that they will love to spend time in their room studying. My hope!
