The saying, “she is 6 going on 16,” has never rung more true than for my little Lucy. She is the princess that completed our family (no, wait, that is our puppy Lulu that joined the family in 2020), but Lucy Grace was the last human that completed the family. Spending more time at home this past year has many of us taking care of some house projects and the kid’s bedrooms are on my list. I completed Lucy’s room before she was born and it needs a paint job, who knew a little girl could wreak such havoc. A tween girls bedroom is the new design direction. Based on some research, tween years are between the ages 9-12. Yes, Lucy has hit this a little sooner, no surprise. So, I definitely want a tween girls bedroom that will take us 6-7 years (just like her little girl’s room did) and then I will be ready to re-design it for a teen.

I wanted Lucy to have some input for her tween bedroom and the number one request she had was a desk. I guess after so many months of e-learning at the dining room table she knew what she wanted. Her only other request was for a little pink on the walls.
When it comes to pink walls I didn’t want to go too bold for a fear that she will outgrow pink before I am ready to repaint the room. I am on the hunt for the perfect shades of pink that will make it through her tween years, stay tuned for that post.
As for the desk being her number one request, I decided to design her entire room around the desk space. Lucy wanted a desk that would be a space for more than homework. She loves to “act like mommy,” or a big girl, and sit with her many sparkly notebooks and pretend to “work.” She also wanted a space to be creative. She loves to draw, color, and create art. A larger desk would be ideal and serve as a table too to be a creative.
After realizing that I needed to get rid of her current bookcases (over 15 years old and constantly breaking), I decided to partner with National Business Furniture. With over 45 years of office furniture experience, fast shipping, and a lifetime guarantee, I knew it was the right choice. Use code DESIGN10 for a 10% off your own design purchases
I spent some time on their digital catalog and pinned a few pieces that would work for my tween girls’ bedroom. Then, as if Lucy was my client, created three separate design boards for her to pick from. Trust me, that was the hardest part. She loved all of them and wanted all of them.

The top option 1 and 3 might seem the same, but the biggest difference is the size of the desk. One desk is smaller at 30-in wide versus 48-in wide. The bigger desk will only allow for one bookcase. I should also note that the option 2 is with the smaller desk as well, but placed a separate wall would allow for the double bookcase. Replacing the space under the loft bed with a tween lounge area.
Well, a majority of the pieces have been delivered and painting is to begin soon. Head over to Instagram stories and feed for daily updates on Lucy’s tween girl bedroom.
