Entryway Coat Closet Organization
There is something about back to school that makes moms everywhere want to get organized. Getting spaces in the house organized for the start of school might not help my kids focus any better while e-learning but it makes me feel happy.
After years of an unsightly entryway coat closet, it was time to tackle this space. It had no rhyme or reason. It had the original wood rod going across the center of the closet plus two makeshift DIY shelves above. But, above all else, you might not remember, I don’t have a mudroom! So, this entryway coat closet also serves as the only mudroom/closet on the main floor.
For that reason, I not only needed a system that was durable but functional. I also had to re-evaluate my needs. I realized that my kids NEVER use the closet. I have coat hooks behind the kitchen door that they use and a small space for them to throw their shoes. The person that really uses this closet is me.
Every day before heading out to meet clients I search this closet for a jacket/coat/shoes/purse. Plus my daily walking shoes and fanny pack of course. I decided to make this closet work for me since I use it every day.
I wanted to do it right. So I went online to The Container Store and set up a FREE Virtual In-Home Consultation. I am so glad I took advantage of this free service. I know I would not have been able to design this myself, AND more importantly, I could do it from the comfort of my own home, allowing me to be available for my “e-learners.”
After my easy virtual appointment, I received the design within the hour with direct links to the Elfa system we had picked. Literally was three clicks to purchase everything and select curbside pickup! It couldn’t have been easier and safer!
Okay, so what did I get.

What I Did:
The very first step is to always remove everything from the closet. Literally everything. It is always a little daunting to see what comes out of a closet. I never realize how much I have until it all comes out. I was able to donate 4 large bags of shoes, boots, winter wear including coats. Simplicity has been my 2020 motto and it felt so good to donate items that have just been in there for years.
I took this opportunity to paint the entire closet. It had not been painted in decades. I had to remove the old hardware and shelving bracket anyway. Make sure to always take the necessary lead paint precautions if your home was built prior to 1978, like my home was.
The Elfa closet system is by far the easiest DIY project. I was able to install the top track and initial system in under 30 minutes. There were step by step instructions to follow with photos, I need photos. I am always amazed how simple the Elfa system is to install and how it only uses one top track. AMAZING!
Literally, that was it. I got to play around with the styling and put everything back just the way I like it.
My Fave Closet Accessories:
I am truly obsessed with the gold Accessory Hook Organizer. I bought a couple of extras for my bedroom closet too. Another item I can’t believe I have lived without is the Show Drawer organizer! Keeps my fave work shoes from getting dirty and has the smoothest slide-in/out.
Anyway, click on over and schedule your fee in-home VIRTUAL consult and get organizing.
