Teen Closet Organization
When I was a teen I loved having a clean and organized room. Somehow I simply assumed as my kids got older that they would be the same. Well, here’s a shocker, that didn’t happen. Not only do I have two teen boys but they share a room and a closet. Over the years the closet had become a sort of storage and all the clothes they wear daily were pushed into a double dresser in the room. Needless to say, this wasn’t working anymore. So, we spent the last week completing the Teen Closet Organization project.
Having two teen boys share a small closet is not an impossibility. After going through the process, I was able to discover a few easy tips that helped me with the teen closet organization.
Teen Closet Organization
What I Used :
- Non-slip velvet hangers
- 24 Pocket over the door hanger
- Drop front sweater box: Ideal for all those pro sports jerseys they only wear when they attend those events.
- Drop front shirt box: Great for those dress shirt they only use twice a year
- Drop front shoe box: Perfect for those signed baseball caps they never wear
- Purse Storage Bin: Loved this to store and “hide” all their extra bedsheets/pillowcases
- White Elfa Mesh Closet Drawers: This was the best investment as their double dresser was overflowing. Placed all their sweatpants/exercise clothes here
What I Did:
- Remove everything from the closet. EVERYTHING. It was insane to see the amount that had been stored in the closet. No wonder they never used it. We went through everything and all items that they no longer wore or fit were donated. I dropped off 4 bags of clothing!
- With an older home, there is a lack of large linen closets. As a result, the extra bedsheets for each room are always stored in that room’s closet. For years my boy’s bedsheets were just stuff to a top-shelf. I LOVE the Cambridge Purse Bin for the bedsheets. I don’t see the messy sheets hanging over and it gives the closet a finished look.
- THEN, I have two boys sharing the closet. I gave the oldest/tallest brother the top rod and the younger brother the bottom rod.
- The last rod would be dedicated to “nice pants” for band concerts, travel hockey games, or church.
- The boys wear a lot of sweatshirts and it takes up a lot of room in their dresser. All sweatshirts got a hanger and placed on separate rods.
- Polo shirts got new hangers and placed on its own separate rod.
- Their button-down “holiday” shirts were placed in a shirt box. They literally wear these 4-5 times a year. This way, they won’t get dusty.
- All their pro sports jerseys, i.e. Cubs, Blackhawks, were also placed in a sweater box.
- The million baseball caps they have but don’t wear were given their own box as well.
- Finally, all the shoes were placed in the over the door hanger and each kid only got one column.
TIP: That I use for myself too. If there isn’t a space for it, then it doesn’t go in. For instance, each kid got a row or column of the shoe organizer. If they had “too many” shoes, they had to decide which ones to get rid of.
It is amazing how an organized closet can truly transform the way we use the rest of our bedrooms and other parts of the home. Before, their shoes were in the entryway closet or floor. They wouldn’t remember where they left their shoes or even which pair they had. Spending the week organizing their closet naturally carried over to their double dresser. Fingers crossed they keep it this way.
Besides finally having an organized space, what this has done for me? Having them put away their own laundry has become easier. Before they would just grab their clean clothes and stuff them into the dresser. Now, they know and understand that everything has a place and that it is easier to put it away when there is a designated area for it.
Happy Organizing! I Would Love To Hear How You Have Organized Your Kids Spaces
