Just like fashion, whether we want to believe it or not, interior design relies on trends. Even when homeowners or interior designers want to think out of the box and be different, in reality, they are still dealing with the dreaded word, TRENDS. For instance, in the last decade 2010-2019, I did see designers, DIYers, decorators venture into their own style BUT there was always something in their spaces that could be tied to the trend of this past decade. Maybe a touch of subway tiles (though that is a RE-CURRENT trend from the 1920s) or splashes of gray.
Maybe you tried to be different and had a unique space, but I guarantee you had a touch of the 50 shades of gray in your space, OR, SHALL I say it? Farmhouse. Many, I mean MANY, embraced this trend for the last decade. Personally, I did not deck out my home like a modern farmhouse. Granted there are aspects I love, but I think some went a little overboard. When you live in the windy city and have “FARMHOUSE” wood signs throughout your house, sorry to say, It’s not a farmhouse.
Now, don’t get me wrong, this trend is cute and cozy. I love it when I visit a B&B in upper Michigan. But, truth be told, I am not feeling it when I am in the middle of a Chicago suburb. BUT, small touches of it are fun in a city home.
I am not trying to be mean, I am simply trying to analyze what “our” trend was for this decade. Every decade has one. 50 years from now, when peeps look back to our last decade 2010-2010, it will be “farmhouse” in all the interior design books.
What is funny about it is that there will be photos of condos 45 floors up in the air in cities like Chicago to Los Angeles that have this style. I think it is one of the first interior design trends that should NOT have been universal. I think it is a decade of design that people might not look back on with great pride.
Okay okay, so what did I love about interior design trends of the last decade. OH SO MUCH! And I am going to say it now and predict that some of these will not only continue in the next year, 2020, BUT FLOURISH in the next decade. My top personal buys are above and the trends that are going to continue…
2019 FAVORITES THAT WILL CONTINUE
- Black and Brass Fixtures (some say gold)
- Mixing Metals Like Noone is Looking
- Marble pieces (not in huge quantity, just small touches)
- Brightening our days with 50 Shades of White. The best part about white is that it is your canvas, you can change it up and play with your furniture/art/accessories for a full decade.
- Simplifying and organizing our spaces without an overabundance of items or decor.

In complete agreement with farmhouse and white! In process of painting common areas white. I’m in a Cape Cod style house 15 minutes from the ocean. I don’t want 5,000 layers of white things. I crave simplicity and the ocean! I want white kitchen cabinets, white subway tile backsplash, white walls, and decent flooring. Since I’ve collected shells since childhood, they’ll show up, but not a beach house sign!
