Living in a 100-year-old home has amazing features, like arched doorways and original built-ins. However, a not so great feature is the lack of closet space or the possibility for a mudroom. I have a small coat closet by the front door and there is no possibility for a mudroom by the side door. With nine months of winter in Chicago, I needed to find a coat closet storage solution to organize all our winter gear, the kids leaving it on the floor and kitchen counters were driving this momma insane.
Coat Closet Storage Solution
Many times we see amazingly organized and color-coded storage closets and feel a little envious. This might not be the prettiest color-coded post but it is the most functional coat closet storage solution I have found and it has been working perfectly for the last couple of weeks.
Before, I had one hook on the door and then an under shelf rack that had all the gloves and hats shoved in. Plus, trust me, when I removed everything from the closet I found hats, scarfs and lost umbrellas pushed into the dark abyss of this closet. The closet is not huge and I needed the coat rack for all of our jackets. For that reason, I knew what I really needed was a coat closet storage solution to go on the back of the door.
With the guidance of The Container Store I discovered the Elfa Closet Door and Wall Rack and I honestly, truly, highly recommend it. Easy for me to install and it is quick and easy access for the kids. They can grab and go with what they need and nothing is getting lost.
Easy Install Tips
There are two ways to install the Elfa Closet Door and Wall Rack. I had the option to hang it over the door. It can come with an easy, no-tools assembly; designed for a standard 7′ door; residential overdoor hooks are included. However, my door, being 100 years old (I think people were shorter when they built homes in the 1920’s) is barely 6 ft, as a result, I needed a shorter wall system.
Also, this is the original solid wood door, as a result, I knew that I could safely install the organizer into the door and it wouldn’t go anywhere for another 100 years.
All You Need
- Elfa Utility Mesh Closet Door & Wall Rack
- A Packet of Anchors & Screws for Hollow-Core Doors Pkg/5 *If you have a solid door like me, do not use anchors just screws
- #2 Phillips head
- 1/10 Point Drill Bit
Quick Install
- Use a level to find the center and make sure it is straight
- Mark your drill holes
- Drill with 1/10 drill bit
- Install the first screw to secure on the door. Then the remaining three.
- Took me less than 5 minutes
Once I had installed my 63″ Mounting Standard Bar I was able to play around on how I wanted to organize the actual boards and baskets. This probably took me the longest simply because I wanted it to be just right for my family’s needs. Making sure the kid’s hats and gloves were at an easy reach and items I didn’t use daily higher up.
I ended up placing the large utility board at the top and hanging those items not used daily with the utility hooks. Then placing the utility mesh baskets below for all the kids’ hats, gloves, sunglasses, and shoe cleaning supplies.

My new coat closet storage solution has truly made me happy! The kids’ items are all in one spot, nothing left on the closet floor or stuffed on a shelf we can’t reach. I love this storage solution so much, I am considering the same one for my boys’ bedroom closet. To organize all their baseball caps, belts, and even all their sports equipment. Besides a bedroom I have also seen this same system used to organize a craft closet, the possibilities are endless.
