There is so much excitement during the holidays that when it comes to decorating I have Christmas music in the background and for the most part I enjoy the process. But, before I know it, December 25th will come and go and it will be time to put all the Christmas decorations away. I am one of those that like to begin the New Year with a clean house and mind. But, I never had a great storage system. This year, I might actually be more excited to store the Christmas decorations because I finally have the right essentials.
How to Store Christmas Decorations
I don’t have a huge home so I need to use the spaces I have wisely. The built-in breakfast nook is where I store all my smaller Christmas Decorations, from the ornaments to the tabletop decor. I’m embarrassed to admit but they were all wrapped in plastic bags. I just didn’t have the right containers. And yes, it has resulted in a few broken ornaments over the years.
But, 2020 is the year of simplifying and organizing. I am actually more excited to store Christmas Decorations this year because I have a system.
Weathertight Totes
First, I will be using the clear weathertight totes for all my organic decorations, from pinecones to berries. Much better than the many ziplock bags.
The clear weathertight totes are also great for delicate figurines like my nutcrackers or other fragile tabletop decors. To protect the decorations from any damage I am using Natural Excelsior to provide some extra padding.

Holiday Lights
I literally had all my Christmas lights rolled up in a big ball and in a garbage bag, on a shelf in the garage. Truly not the best method I was excited to discover that The Container Store has the perfect solution with their 12 gal. Red Flip-Lid Light Wrap Storage Box. I used the removable cord wrap organizers for a stress-free way to keep all my lights from getting tangled.
Ornaments
Don’t ask, but I also had my ornaments in bags BUT they were organized by color. This year, I am using a few of the Multi-Compartment Ornament Storage Trays. They come with 6 larger compartments or 12 smaller ones that are perfectly stackable.
Artificial Tree
I did have our tree in its original box in the garage and it wasn’t pretty. The box had some water damage so it was falling apart. Plus many layers of old tape around it. Not anymore, I threw the box in the recycling bin and this year I will be using the Sterilite Tree Storage Box for my DIY Faux Tree. It will be safe year-round in our 100-year-old garage.
I will also be using the 24″ Wreath Box for my front door holiday wreath. YES, it was also in a plastic bag in my garage.
Everything is available at your local Container Store or online. Truly worth it as it also makes it easier to carry into the home or garage when I finish.
