Thank you Lowe’s Home Improvement For Sponsoring my tips on how to maintain your lawn. As always all thoughts/opinions are 100% my own
I have maintained our yard for the last ten years. When we first bought our home we just couldn’t afford a weekly lawn service. So, my husband had inherited his dad’s lawnmower. Through the past decade, I have learned ways to keep my lawn healthy year after year. When a friend recently commented that it looked great and who do I use, she was shocked to find out I do it all. That is when I decided I needed to share my tips on how to maintain your lawn.
How to Maintain Your Lawn with Lowe’s
I am no master gardener but I do take pride in the fact that I my backyard lawn and garden has flourished through the years. Now, don’t get me wrong, there were times that I had issues. Like the summer when my lawn had grubs. I had no idea why it was turning yellow and dying. But, I learned and was able to prevent it from happening in the future. Or the time that the kids had a slip n’slide and it destroyed the lawn. YUP, I learned that healthy lawns need are delicate and need to be cared for. So, here is what I do, how I do it and what I use.
WHAT I Do To Maintain A Healthy Lawn
- EARLY SPRING: Note that I live in cold climate and have cold season grass
- Test Your Soil: A kit can help you determine what nutrients your soil needs
- Remove all Fall leaves / Spring Clean
- For the first time, MOW lower than usual
- Turn the dirt around bushes, flower beds, and trees
- Aerate your lawn
- Rake Your Lawn THEN
- Add Scotts GrubEx Grub Killer
- Add compost where necessary
- Spread Starter Turf Builder Annual Program Lawn Fertilizer
- Seed Your with Scotts Scotts Landscaper’s Seed
- Rake in loosely
- Topcoat with compost or peat moss
- SPRING – SUMMER MAINTENANCE
- Water in the evenings: I prefer evenings because this will keep the lawn moist through the night and early morning versus drying out quickly with the sun
- Water your lawns regularly but not on a schedule. For instance one week you can do M-F-Sa. And the next week, Do Tu-F-Su. This allows the lawn to adapt to natural weather patterns, teaching them to tolerate drought.
- Mow Your grass 1-1.5times a week and do not cut below 2in. I always keep my grass at 2in and never shorter, this helps protect the roots.
- Edge and Trim around all necessary areas.
- Use your trimmer to remove any weeds
The above photo was before I mowed my lawn for the first time since the Fall. The grass was about 4-4.5 inches tall. I always wait until the grass has grown long for that very first mow.
WHAT I USE – My Equipment
Well, for 10 years I used our inherited lawn mower and it officially died last summer. It was 30 years old! It also gas operated but I wanted a change. I needed something powerful, environmentally friendly, self-propelled, easy to use and easy storage. That is when I discovered all I need was at Lowe’s, my one-stop-shop.
- CRAFTSMAN V60 60-Volt Max Lithium Ion Self-propelled 21-in Cordless Electric Lawn Mower
- CRAFTSMAN V60 60-volt Max 15-in Straight Cordless String Trimmer
Craftsman V60 Lawnmower
Battery operated and so happy. I cannot begin to explain how powerful this battery is. It is as strong as my previous gas powered mower. Quick to charge, easy to place, and lasts will last a full hour.
A perfect even cut! I have always composted so the bagging system is great to carry the grass clippings to my compost bin. Not only that, but it is a 3 -1 system: Mulch, bag the grass, OR you can simply use the side discharge: this will leave the grass clippings on the lawn.
TIP 1: I use the side discharge every other time. I have always felt that the loose cut grass helps protect and add nutrients back to the lawn. aka grass cycling
TIP 2: Mow when the grass is dry (never wet)
TIP 3: Change the mowing pattern each time you mow
Storage! My garage is overflowing with bikes, sports equipment and more. I wish I could say cars, but, those don’t even fit anymore. Yes, I know, tackling the garage is my next project. So, I was sold on the Craftsman Lawnmower when I discovered how easy it was to fold and store.
Craftsman V60 Trimmer
I have always felt that what gives the lawn a professional maintained look is to edge and trim every time I mow. It not only keeps the grass from over-growing onto the walkways BUT it is the best equipment for removing weeds that grow around your lawn or on brick paved areas.
In the first photo my grass had begun to grow onto your paved space. Simply flip the trimmer upside down and create a finished look to the lawn.
TIP 1: Buy extra trimmer line when you purchase your trimmer
TIP 2: Trim high grass from top to bottom. Don’t place trimmer below grass
TIP 3: Taper along the edges. In other words, hold the trimmer so the string strikes the grass at an angle.
I always have projects up my sleeve and I have always said, Lowe’s is my one-stop-shop. With everyday low prices and Summer promotions on high-performance tools and materials, save time and money at your local Lowe’s or online.
