Every since I posted my bamboo chippendale seating post two weeks; many have asked how I scored my antique dining chairs. So, today I am sharing some tips I have on how to search online for antique seating and some of my favorite sites to shop or get inspiration from. I wish I could say that scoring your antique seating is easy and quick, but, it takes patience and time to find what you truly aspire to have. If you don’t remember, I waited almost five years for my eight chairs, you can read all about the search for my antique seating here.
Antique Dining Chairs : Bamboo Chippendale Chars
I have always wanted bamboo Chippendale seating for my dining room, basically because my desk chair is a few feet away and is an authentic bamboo chair. I wanted to carry this design aesthetic over into the dining room. However, I didn’t want to pay retail. Currently, Ballard Designs sells a set of two for $503, and that is on sale! Most importantly they are copy-cat-chic designs. In other words, they are not authentic vintage bamboo chairs, but, almost a type of plastic that is made in China. Now, don’t get me wrong, I love Ballard Designs for many furniture options, but, I simply wanted authentic bamboo chairs. So I had to keep looking. And the grand old question: Where do I look?
Tip 1: Antique Dining Chairs : What Site I Use To Find Dining Room Seating
For antique furniture there are online auction sites I will consistently visit plus other estate sale type business online.
Here are some of my go to:
- Viyet
- Everything But The House
- Estate Sales.com
- Craigslist
I actually found my dining chairs from an auction site that posted it on Craigslist. Now, every day we go online, right? So, I have a list of 2-5 items I want. For instance, bamboo chippendale chairs were on it, bankers desk, brass candlesticks, mid-mod lounge chair. I keep that list next to my computer. Every couple of days I would search my go to antique websites hoping I would find someone selling. And BAM! It happened, someone was selling 8 antique dining chairs. Specifically, my dream come true, bamboo Chippendale chairs. I knew they were used and needed some TLC but nothing I couldn’t handle.
Tip 2: SAVING TIME with Search Alerts
Did you know that you can save searches and turn on email alerts on sites like Craigslists. You just plugin your keyword search, for example, brass candlesticks, and then “save search.” If something is ever listed for sale that meet that description you will get an alert email immediately.
Now, lets take it a step further, you can also do this on google. I currently have a few very specific keyword searches saved in my google profile under google alerts. Trust me, I get so happy when I see an email in my inbox from google alert, because then I know someone was posted online for what I have been waiting for.
So, yes, I did have bamboo chippendale dining chair as one of my alerts on craigslist, so the second it was listed I got notified. This is what it looked liked on the “for sale” site, but, I saw the potential.
I am so glad I waited patiently checking the websites daily for my dream seating. I scored all eight dining chairs for under $100. And, if you are wondering if this was a great find, ummmm, check out what is selling currently online for ONE antique dining chair.
Okay, so after waiting patiently at auction and estate sale sites, like Viyet, I was able to score eight bamboo seating chairs for a great deal. Here is what it was before and after a little TLC.

Those chairs look fantastic. I’m glad to see there are sites where I don’t have to bid on antique furniture to finish off my room. Viyet looks like a great place to get some antique furniture to blend with my décor.

Painting your bamboo chairs white totally brought a different feel to them. Almost a more modern aesthetic, yet the chairs retained their vintage feel. Good job!
