When I publish a blog post, there is usually a good flow of steps, but, this post might seem like I am all over the place because I am just so excited to share this amazing new tool. I am obsessed with it and have no clue how we all don’t have one. I am talking about the ColorReader. Since I’ve had it, I have not used my paint fan decks in the last 2 weeks for picking out paint colors. I knew the true test would be if it could accurately read the wall colors in my home. I placed it on my wall, and BAM, perfect match! My jaw literally dropped, like the emoji 😮 I still doubted and went room to room. Each time it nailed it. I learned some tips and tricks to get an accurate reading, who needs this tool and why this will answer a very common question, how to choose paint colors.
How To Choose Paint Colors
I know I am not alone when it comes to finding the right paint color. We even google up images and read blogs about it. Right? We go to the paint store, pick up some paint chips or a fan deck. Find colors we like on paper and bring then home or to a client only to discover it is not the color we wanted. Sometimes we hold it up to a pillow, rug, piece of art to see if it will be a good match or simply be a complimentary color. A waste of time now that I discovered the ColorReader. Especially since I know how accurate it was reading my walls. I did learn through, trial and error, don’t put it on the darkest wall, in other words, farthest away from natural light. I put the ColorReader as close to natural light, for each room, and got 100% accuracy.
So, Who needs the ColorReader:
1 – Interior Designers:
I’m sure it has happened to all of us. You arrive at a consult and the client says, I really want an accent color in “this color” and they point to a patch of color on a pillow or a piece of art. Before, I would pull out my fan decks and truly look a little unprofessional. Now, just take this out of your bag, grab your phone, instant match in a second.
For years I have wanted to know the exact color on my Design Sponge book. I love the salmon meets orange shade. I have tried to carry the color, as a small accent, in my space. For those designers/decorators out there, when you have a client who points to a book or a piece of art, and says “I love this color,” now it’s not a problem.
Even better, it will instantly read the color, it’s entire breakdown, and provide various complimentary colors.
2 – Graphic Designers/Artist:
Each time you read a color it provides you with all the details, including the HEX code! I know I bothered my graphic designer for my logo. When she was making the logos I knew what shade of gold and blue I wanted. It was from a pillow in my living room. I emailed her the picture of the pillow. It took her a few tries to produce a logo color I liked. If I had had this tool I could have saved us all time with the HEX code.
3 – ANYONE:
Maybe you are in the market for a new home and know you will have paint projects in your future. Maybe you just love design, watercolors, painting, and you were at a restaurant and saw a gorgeous wallpaper or wall color that you wanted to know the color to. I know I would take this out of my purse and discreetly find out on my own. You know I would. Better yet, maybe you are at a Mom’s School gathering at someone’s house and you love a color they used. You ask them and they reply, “oh, I don’t remember”
You know that type of mom, they just “can’t” remember, basically they don’t want to tell you.
No worries, I have my ColorReader. 😉
NOW, How It Works:
When it arrives, you should visit the website address provided in the box. Then, download the ColorReader app to your smartphone. Follow the steps it provides. Honestly, set up only takes one minute.
In my living room I have an accent color on my textured built-in’s back wall. In 3 seconds it read the color, HC-146!
NOW THIS IS WHERE THE COLORREADER BLEW ME AWAY:
I wrote a blog post last summer when I updated my curb appeal and painted my front door a royal shade of blue. You can read all about that here. But, I had trouble finding a blue I liked until I mixed together two Benjamin Moore colors. Many have asked me what color my door is and I refer them to that post, it is actually a mix of two colors. UMMMMMM, helllo, jaw dropping. I placed the ColorReader on my door and…..
YES!! IT IS ABOUT 80/20 PATRIOT BLUE AND BLUE. AHHHHHH!!! I WAS JUMPING UP AND DOWN
Okay, sorry, can you tell how excited I am to find a product that works! It works on all materials, from natural elements, like flowers, to your own hair or textured wallpaper and fabric.
If I haven’t convinced you that this is a must have for your toolbox or decorator’s bag, well, then maybe if I offer you a 15% off your first ColorReader. Yup, just head on over and use CODE KEKI for 15% off. Happy Coloring!

Another technological breakthrough. It seems that there is something new that comes out every single day. I do think this Color Reader would be a great tool for Interior Designers. I am sharing this post with my friend. She is really good in her career and to make things a bit easier for her and her clients to choose a wall/house color would be awesome.

This is pretty awesome! I wouldn’t use this just for picking the perfect wall color, but when I’m looking for a color in graphic design. This is a pretty sweet little gadget.

Hi Keki!
Thank you for sharing this tip! I had no idea this kind of tool exists! I agree, choosing a new color to paint the walls is fun, but can be challenging, too! You have to think of so many things, how does the color match with other colors around it and so on.
As you said, this tool can make anyone’s work easier. Especially interior designers could benefit from it, also workers who do painting services.
Thank you for letting us know about this tool! I will also start using it!
