Thank you to Walgreens and P&G for Sponsoring this post. As always all opinions are 100% truthful and my own.
I love Spring! It is my favorite season, but, if you live in Chicago, like me, it sure has not felt like it. We all have been waiting, maybe not so patiently, for Spring to arrive. Then, in the last couple of days, can it be, has it happened, has Spring Sprung? Spring is the beginning of many things. Fresh air, opened windows, long walks, days in the park, birds chirping, and my favorite–spring cleaning. A few years ago I shared some of the ways I get my home ready for summer, but, this time, I am sharing my spring cleaning tips for Healthy Home for my family, and if you are in the Chicago area, you can get free samples of all the products below on May 6th at participating Walgreens (find your local store below).
Spring Cleaning Tips For A Healthy Home
After being stuck inside for months, many many months, you begin to notice the many issues your home has. For instance, the drab paint color that hasn’t been updated in, oh, I don’t know, years. The cracks on the ceiling, or the broken porch screens, or the smaller items, like the dusty ceiling light fixtures and discolored (from dust) valances.
Well, at least for me the list is endless. Each Spring I go around room by room making my Spring Cleaning to-do list and I am so lucky to partner with Walgreens and P&G this year to tackle my list.
I know many homeowners, like me, wait for warmer temps to begin home projects. We wait because we simply want to be able to open the windows, let in the fresh air and, begin de-cluttering and cleaning our spaces after months of being stuck inside with 5+ humans. Trust me, it can get a little drab. But, this Spring, as you all know, I am also doing the One Room Challenge and updating our entire basement. What that means is that I have needed to de-clutter, clean and re-organize all the spaces.
Now that the basement renovation project is nearing the end, I see the disaster zones I want to attack and attack I will. My goal this Spring is to create a healthy home with P&G products. I have been using them for years and I know it works for my family. So, here is what I am using and I am sharing all my tips to rejuvenate my home too.
1 – Mr. Clean Magic Eraser: Tough On All Kinds of Messes and Dirt
I cannot live without this. I use it for all my home staging projects. I always have one in my tool box for staging. But, I use it in my own home too. NOT just for cleaning those grimy fingerprints around the a light switch but, get this, I use it to clean off all my white Adirondack chairs. Mr. Clean Magic Eraser is not only tough on all kinds of messes but dirt, real dirt on that outdoor patio furniture.
My heavy white patio chairs stay outside all winter long, because they are too big to put in storage. So, come Spring, I hose them down just so they are wet, and then with my Mr. Clean Magic Eraser I clean them. No need to re-paint all your white wood patio furniture, I get it done with my magic eraser. Which by the way, if you follow my Instagram stories you would have known I did this last weekend.
Okay, so not only can you take your Magic Eraser to clean off your furniture after a long winter of squirrels and birds sitting on it (yuck, my o.c.d kicks in, and I am like, “kids! don’t sit until I clean it” aka healthy home!) I use my Magic Eraser inside in more ways than one.
Naturally, you use it to wipe down light switch plates and interior walls to get them shiny white again, but I always soak it in water and then clean my staircase banisters, can you even imagine, with three kids what those white and black banisters look like after 9 months of winter? I use the Magic Eraser on my white and on BLACK banister, especially on the Newels, it seems to be the spot everyone touches. Even on my black banister, the grime and dirt come off but not the paint!
Lastly, after enjoying our living room fire-place all winter long, the white mantle always is a little discolored from the ash. Guess what gets it all cleaned up, yup, my Magic Eraser. Again, no need to repaint, just clean up all the ash so your family has a healthy home all summer long. If you look closely, you can see on the left where I have cleaned compared to the darker right side.
2 – Swiffer Dusters: Trap and Lock Dust and Allergens
Can we say, “best duster ever!” I will admit, when this came out years ago I was like, “nah, I don’t need it?” Well, someone told me it was a life changing must-have. I grabbed a couple at my local Walgreens and dusted away. But, wait for it…I now use it for much more.
I live in a 100-year-old house and I know many of use in the Chicagoland area do too. You know what that means, radiators. At first I was not a fan of the radiators because they take up a lot of floor space, but, come to find out they work better than newer heating systems, and if you have a kid with allergies, radiators are the must.
As always, I am trying to create a Healthy Home for my kids and one of my three kids has bad asthma and allergies. I learned that radiant heat is the best for him and I that Swiffer Duster’s are the only cleaning tool that can reach those hard to reach places. Honestly, every Spring I run my Swiffer Duster between all the rails, under and around. I can’t even tell you how much dust it catches, just look.
Okay, so another tip using your Swiffer Duster this Spring, instead of moving my oven/stove top, refrigerator and other heavy pieces, I run the Swiffer under all of them. I am a neat freak and clean my house often, I am always still shocked to see how much dust can get under and above our kitchen appliances. Goal, again, creating a Healthy Home for my family this Spring. Let’s Do This!!
3 & 4 – Tide Pods and Downy Unstopables: Small But Powerful Pack with 10x Cleaning Power
The best part of Spring Cleaning is literally cleaning everything in hot water. Talk about disinfecting. Every Spring I do a deep wash in my home and that includes the window treatments. I do vacuum my window treatments/valances but, come Spring time I actually take them all down and wash them with Tide Pods 3 and 1. WAIT!!!!!! There is more. I add Downy Unstopables to the wash, to all the valances, that are in main living spaces. Downy Unstopables In Wash Scent Booster gives my laundry up to 12 weeks of freshness. I just add the Unstopable Beads into the cap and toss in. It truly will last for weeks after placing them back in my dining room or bedrooms. Leaving spaces smelling clean and fresh. I do the same for the window treatments in the bedrooms. Life changing.
Another tip, I remove all the covers of my throw pillows and wash them in Tide Pods. Again, I add downy Unstopables so that they can smell fresh longer.
5 – Gain Flings: 50% More Original Scent to Your Laundry
Okay, so if you are new here you might not know, I have two hockey players. Yes, proud and supportive hockey mom here but have you ever smelled hockey equipment? Exactly!
My husband is in charge of washing and maintaining their equipment and that he does. But, every Spring they need a deep clean. For that, we use Gain Flings and do a double rinse cycle. I also will add Downy Unstopables to the wash and their hockey equipment will smell better longer! Best smelling hockey boys in the locker room.

Magic Erasers are a godsend. I don’t know how my mom got by without them years ago, but they have saved our family so many times.
