Who knew how fast six weeks would go by when doing the One Room Challenge. But, with the help of a few people I was able to pull it all together in the nick of time, literally, till the last minute. Six weeks ago I shared my initial plans to update the entire basement (two rooms). I wanted to create a fun teen hangout room, and, update my husbands work space. Also, I did it all in real time, in other words, nothing was pre-ordered or completed beforehand. I know, not too smart but, using some insider design tips I was able to accomplish it, and now it is time to share the space, my tips, and my thank-you’s.
One Room Challenge Reveal – Teen Hangout Room
FIRST and FOREMOST, this space would have not been possible if it weren’t for the following sponsors, so THANK YOU!
Our basement had not been updated since the day we moved in. It wasn’t a bad at first. BUT, that was 11 years ago and three kids later. Can you imagine the wear and tear on the carpet and walls? Also, I’m a pretty organized person and throw a lot out. Who knew how much I could actually keep in stored in organized in bins. In order to create the new space, which included painting the interior of closets and storage areas, I had to take everything out, and it wasn’t pretty. See the disaster that it was in Week Two and Week Four. Oh my gosh, my anxiety was off the charts. The good news is that I ended up getting rid of almost 97% of what was downstairs. We kept photo albums, some sports equipment and my husbands favorite chair from his bachelor days. UGH, I know. Other than that, it was donated or thrown away.
Here is a quick reminder of the before space: The Play Area (soon-to-be teen hangout room) and My Husbands Office
OKAY, ARE YOU READY FOR IT: Teen Hangout Room and Hubby’s New Office. PLEASE NOTE, or more so, note to self, don’t ever do a room makeover that needs to be photographed in the basement with zero natural light and not have the right backlight, flash, screen etc etc. I tried my best with what I had.
In a little more detail, cause I can’t just get enough of that green! There is so much white and gray all over the place I am ready bring back bold colors. My boys are big hockey kids and will be heading to our high school alma matar, go green and blue. I though of doing a royal blue wall, because it is timeless and so classic, but, that just wasn’t bold enough, so Derbyshire Green it was. Honestly, everyone loves it! My husbands office stayed a neutral yet calming Repose Gray.
So lets go over the details and where it all came from.
1 – Paint
Thank you to Sherwin-Williams for sponsoring the paint needed for this project and to Handyman Connection of Wheaton for their services.
The Colors Used:
- Repose Gray SW 7015 on all the walls in satin
- Derbyshire Green SW 6741 as an accent wall in satin
- Pure White SW 7005 for all the trims and doors in Semi-gloss
- White for ceiling in flat
2 – Carpeting
I had to have something durable, but soft, for all the traffic flow and sleepovers. I also needed it cheap and in-stock. For that reason, I went to my local carpet store and headed straight to the close-out section. Found what I liked, and what was in stock for almost a 75% savings.
The carpet is Pandora’s Box in Greystone
3 – The Furnishings
We got rid of everything but, a vintage chest I love, and my husbands favorite chair-which we put in his office. The kids wanted bean bags and, at first, I was hesitant. I will admit, BEST DECISION. They have been down there with friends ever since, just relaxing, and well, “hanging out.” I added a smaller side love seat for those that just wanted to get off a bean bag, which is usually me when I go down to visit them.
I added a cubby for drinks and to keep extra snacks in the black basket underneath. The walls are decorated with vintage flags my husband collected when he was a kid, plus our high school memmorablia. WHICH BY THE WAY will be their high school too.
- Big Joe Bean Bags from Wayfair
- Boyd Armless Loveseat in Montana Navy from Wayfair
- White 2-Cube Organizer with black storage from Target
- All Pillows from Home Living Inc,
My Husbands Office Furnishings
- Wood Braylen Desk from Cost Plus World Market
- Metal Side Organizer/Table from Cost Plus World Market
4 – SPECIAL ACCESSORIES
I added a few special accessories to the walls to finish of the teen hangout space.
- Large Seagrass Basket for storage
- Growth Chart from White Loft USE CODE Keki to GET 15% off
- NBA Bball hoop and darts from Target
- Oversized Toppling Timber Blocks from Wayfair
Well, that is it, I will be making slight additions to the office, but overall, kids have to be pulled away from the space and the hubby is happy. OH, and don’t forget to visit all the other Featured Designers and Guest Participants for this years ORC.

You did a great job with that space! We have a little media room, that I am currently calling “The Little Man Cave” that I hope to make into a neat space for my kids. Right now it’s a total joke. it has our old breakfast nook table in there and a TV in the corner with an xbox hooked up to it and nothing on the walls. So yeah, it needs a little love. I love your giant jenga game you have going on.
Cecilia Cannon says
lol, totally get it. our space before was a total joke. it was the basement so I din’t make it a priority but then no one wanted to go down there. so glad I tackled it this ORC

I love the dark green color choice. I have nephews who are getting their basement redone and before your post I didn’t think the room needed repainting. However, I can now see that a pop of color goes a long way.

This space came out so great!! I love the green wall, that was such a good call for a basement! Decluttering is the WORST……..I need to go through our basement and do that very thing (before my kids get out of school and veto all the things I’m getting rid of 🙂 ). You must be thrilled to have these spaces totally refreshed! Enjoy and congrats!
Cecilia Cannon says
Decluttering was awful! but so worth it.
