More than half way through the One Room Challenge and we have progress. Like real progress and I am 100% positive I could not have done it alone. Work and life is so crazy right now that I knew I needed help to get this basement makeover completed on time. AND on top of it, I am doing the entire One Room Challenge in real-time. In other words, I didn’t start this project before the first week it launched, I didn’t even order anything until the first week (and yesterday I was still ordering). I know, I’m crazy, but I really wanted to show my peeps (you guys) that tackling an entire basement makeover can happen in 6 weeks. Okay, so what progress have I made and how?
One Room Challenge Week 4 – Basement Makeover
The first step was to completely empty out the space. I am not a hoarder and I regularly donate toys, books and anything else we have outgrown. But, amazingly, we still had stuff. A lot of it. Especially tucked away in those closets. I spent a few days taking everything out, sorting donate piles, hand me down piles, and simple throw in the garbage pile. The two spaces, tween room and home office was a disaster after taking it all.
TWEEN SPACE
OFFICE SPACE
I got about 85% of everything removed. The rest was placed in the middle of the room or in our dining room. Next step, secure my painter and paint colors.
Okay, I can admit when I need help, and this was one of those times. My husband is basically based out of L.A. for work during this craziness (I know, he couldn’t have planned it better) so when I connected with the Handyman Connection, I told Mike what I needed and time frame. There was a moment of silence and he then replied, “okay, not a problem.” One week later his painter Kevin was here on-site and knocked out the entire basement in two days. You need to know that this would have taken me a full week, painting at night after kids go to bed, and it would have looked like my kids painted the walls. I cannot paint perfectly like a professional. I can always tell when I walk into a home if a professional painter was involved or not. Right?
Well, Kevin arrived before 8:00a.m. both days and got straight to work. You could totally tell he was passionate about being a painter. He loved sharing his painting tips and his knowledge was on point. At one point, I walked downstairs at and I couldn’t believe how fast things were progressing. Apparently rollers matter.
For all you local readers, check them out, they handle it all, from painting to repairs, carpentry, deck work, and electrical, i.e. hanging light fixtures and more.
So, I am not going to reveal the entire painted space just yet, because, well, that is in two weeks and it still is a disaster zone. But I will let you know that I worked with Sherwin-Williams on this project, and even Kevin couldn” stop complimenting the Sherwin-Willams products I opted for.
Eminence High Performance Ceiling Paint
- Emerald Interior Acrylic Latex Paint in Satin for all the walls – Repose Gray and a Bold Green
- Emerald Urethane Trim Enamel Semi Gloss – Pure White
- Eminence High Performance Ceiling Paint – Flat White
If you remember from week one, I do have an accent color, but I am also using a classic color on all the other walls. AND, side note: Who knew how much paint this basement would take. I always felt it was a small basement, ummm, 7 gallons later, not so small.
Finally, carpet selection. Now, remember I am doing this in real time. There is no way I can wait 8+ weeks for a carpet install. So I headed to my local carpet store Lewis and headed straight to the close-out BUT in-stock wall and found many options. I narrowed it down based on two conditions. Tightness of the carpet, my boys go up and down daily with their hockey equipment, for that reason, I wanted a rug that wouldn’t wear quickly. Secondly, I wanted something darker than what we had to hide any possible stains. I am a neat freak but those tweens, you never know.
Well, now off to source all my smaller pieces and accessories and start putting this space back together again.
A big thank you to Handyman Connection and to Sherwin-Williams for sponsoring this post. As always, the thoughts and opinion are 100% my own and true, you know me! You can also check out all the behind the scenes on my instagram story highlights, and continue watching as I countdown, two more weeks.

Love the color on the carpeting you picked. Plus it looks really durable for a basement, which is so important.
Cecilia Cannon says
exactly! I was more concerned about durability on this one considering all the traffic it gets with the kids

I love having a finished basement. We have a guest room in ours and the rest of it is my husband’s mancave. He has a 150 inch screen down there. (I know I know…I gave him an eyeroll too) Anyway, I have to tackle our garage soon. Its the dumping grounds for everything.
Cecilia Cannon says
lol, that sounds like my husbands dream!

Basements are nice for extra space. We had a gorgeous one when we lived up north but it was VERY hard to keep mold out of it.
Cecilia Cannon says
I totally get you! We have to keep the dehumidifier on all the time

Your new space is going to be fabulous! I love the carpet you selected and it will hold up well to your teens. Isn’t it crazy how much stuff we collect and keep? I just started cleaning out the closet in my office and have a huge pile of stuff to donate. We are two people and do we really need 4 spare blankets and 16 bath towels LOL
Cecilia Cannon says
it is nuts how much stuff we accumulate and it just sits hidden away. 🙂
