I spend way too much time traveling in my car, from client site visits to hockey carpool. At work I am active, walking the property, moving furniture, shopping for accessories. Then, I am usually rushing to pick up my kids and spend the rest of the day shuffling from one activity to the next. So, I need outfits for a working mom that are cute, comfy and chic. Also, Spring being my favorite fashion season, I thought I tackle a spring wardrobe capsule. No bulky jackets or boots, but at the same time, no shorts needed (aka, sometimes moms are too busy to shave). Right? I headed to Alt Summit recently and it was the perfect time to bring out my Spring outfits and test some out. I am all about fewer quality peices that I can interchange, aka wardrobe capsule, which I of course did a few weeks ago and it has been life changing.
Spring Wardrobe Capsule For The Busy Mom
A wardrobe capsule is basically reducing your entire closet to 40 or less peices. I literally took everything out of my closet. EVERYTHING. I can’t even show you what my room looked like cause it was truly awful to see how much clothing I did have that just sat in my closet. Just taking up space. I was so glad to fill up bags and bags of clothing to donate for someone else to get better use out of.
It was easy to get rid of items following a few simple rules:
1 – Get rid of anything that doesn’t make you feel great.
2 – Take out items you have not worn in 3+ months (take it by season. If you are winter, don’t get rid of summer items. In other words, create a winter capsule, spring capsule, summer capsule and fall. See, technically your closet won’t just have 40 items, if you do it by season but many items might overlap. SO, if you haven’t worn an item in over a year, bye Felicia.
3- They don’t fit right or take a step back and think, is this really my style. This was a big one for me, I had bought things cause they were trendy, like a Vineyard Vines floral blouse. UMMM, hello, I am not that gal. Don’t be your neighbor, be you!
There are some great fashion websites out there with more how-to for your wardrobe capsule, do a little research and then purge. Since, fashion is not my expertise go ahead and click over there for more tips. Now, I am a shoe and purse gal, but I did get rid of a lot of shoes that hurt my feet or simply were not me. I kept all the purses/totes/ that were of quality and value to me, otherwise, out they went. Now, I have all shoes that actually fit right, and well, look cute. Plus my purse babies.
Then I got new hangers and re-did my closet. I removed a shelf that was piled with too many sweaters and created my jewelry / perfume area within my closet. If you don’t have a large walk-in, remove a shelf to create a little accessory area within what should be a sweater shelf.
