It has happened. It is hard to believe but the bathroom remodel is complete. Like any home renovation things and life happen and, what you wish you could have completed in record time got finished in real time. The actual demo and work was perfect and just about flawless thanks to the patience of my amazing contractors. It was the design decisions to be made before demo and the finishing touches that added time, BUT all I can say is pour me a glass of bubbly and fill the tub!
Here, let me remind you of my design plan and the outdated bath before pics
THE HORROR BEFORE: Notice the following
1. Outlet above sink, like literally above the sink
2. Toilet that is too large for the space by 3-5 inches overhang
3. Medicine cabinet that can’t even photograph well
4. Outdated and cracked ceramic floor and shower tiles with forest green accents
5. Radiator cover that was too large and broken
6. Cheap hardware store sconce
7. NO functional towel rack / holder
8. No storage at all. Not even enough space to put your toothbrush.
9. Cast iron tub that was completely peeling
10. No baseboard cap or base shoe (for baseboard trims)
11. Grout was mildew-y
12. You can’t see it, but the bathtub spout didn’t work so if you wanted to take a bath you filled it by running the shower
13. and lucky #13, it was just not enjoyable.

AND THE AFTER. THE REVEAL
So what changed? EVERYTHING! First, I knew I wanted an open shelf above the toilet for an easy to grab items used daily. I contemplated free floating wood shelves, well, because it’s trendy, and then just white wood, but then I opted for the Jvj Paramount timeless glass shelf with lower towel rack from Quality Bath and just love it. I used my favorite mini hurricane vases from Cost Plus World Market to hold those daily items and an easy to reach towel for the kids.
Okay so lighting was crucial. I new I wanted to keep with the integrity of the home’s year, 1929, and making sure the bathroom kept with a traditional style; however, light fixtures are the easiest way to mix in styles without seeming out of place. For that reason, I opted for a more modern light fixture then the typical sconces. After some searching I fell in love with Kovacs Polished Chrome Saber Light and the price was unbeatable. Truly looks more expensive then it cost.
I love my vanity. Prior we had a Robern vanity and encountered two issues. One, it had insert light bulbs and each light bulb was $90 to replace every 3-9 months. NOT FUN! Second, one of my boys shattered on inside mirror and well, 7 years bad luck. It’s funny to think that it might have been exactly 7-8 years since the shattered mirror that we replaced it. So, yeah, maybe our bad luck is now gone with the new bath.
If we remember my last bathroom update post it was all about the shower niche. I wanted one and wouldn’t hire a contractor that said it wasn’t a 100% possibility. Originally I wanted a super long niche but I wasn’t up for moving studs so I happily settled for a relatively long niche. It is at the perfect hight for my kids to grab things. Deep enough to fit large bottles of shampoo or 2 rows of shower stuff and it is flawless with the matching tiles as opposed to accent tiles.
I also stuck with the Grohe for the bathtub spout and handle. I cannot stand bath tub spouts that have those buttons on top that can unscrew. My kids have unscrewed them and they went down the drain. So I opted for a fixe polished chrome spout instead.
For a list of all the items used see below and stay tune to find out why this bathroom is 100% kid friendly on my next post.
Kohler Verdera Mirror Cabinet // Kohler Adhair One Piece Toilet // Carrara Marble Basketweave Floor Tiles // Gray Subway Tiles // Kohler Devonshire Sink // Kohler Devonshire Faucet // Wall Color // Saber Light Sconces // Glass Shelf Towel Rack // Bathroom Towel Hooks // Shower Curtain // Hurricane Jars // Grohe Bauloop Tub Shower Combo // Kohler Toilet Paper Holder
