Recently I attended the phenomenal designer kitchens tour of the North Shore of Chicago. A great event presented by The Junior League of Evanston-North Shore. It was not only eye dropping but inspiring. I am currently working with two full build interior clients and I surely walked away with some innovative and new ideas / trends that I want to share.
Designer Kitchen Tour
So the #1 trend I saw was for sure the painted cabinets. NO ONE, I mean no one, had mahogany cabinets. Now, some did have accents of dark mahogany cabinetry on an island, but every designer kitchen had white or shades of gray cabinetry.
Some clients get concerned that gray is a trend, a fad, that won’t last long. I can promise you it will last as long as the mahogany trend lasted, and as long as the white cabinets lasted in the 80’s.
You know during the 80’s it was white cabinets, then in early 2000’s till recently was the Mahogany cabinets. So now we have returned to white or gray cabinets. All trends in interior kitchens last long enough for you to (at least a decade) to enjoy it (at least for a decade).
I mean, what is there NOT to enjoy here.
SO, the other big trend I saw was in hardware. We are use to pulls and knobs, pulls and knobs. I recently convinced one of my clients to do only long wire pulls for the entire kitchen. No knobs. I was so relieved to see many of the homes follow suit.
Another great trend that I am loving is the mixing of metals. SO glad we have gone away from matchy matchy. Now, some homes owners like to stay consistent. But if you have a little flair in you, venture from the norm and mix nickel with brass and chrome. Have fun with it.
Lastly, one concept I was happy to see was the creativity in choosing light fixtures and countertops. Before, you would go into homes and see the same countertop in all new builds. NOW, some are doing butcher block, some are doing black honed granite, some are doing carrara marble, not one house was alike when it came to countertops.
Also, light fixtures were up for grabs. From lanterns, to teardrop chandeliers and vintage crystal.
It is refreshing to see that each space was kept unique by the finishings touches. In other words, even though, they were all white or gray cabinets, you would not have known it cause the character of the fixtures made them distinguishable and unique.
This was surely a tour not to be missed!
