A big thank you to World Market for sponsoring this post, as always all opinions are completely honest and my own.
Spring is all about sprucing up your spaces! From de-cluttering closets and rooms, you can’t go into Spring without a couple organization projects to attack.
Now, I have a couple spaces on my list, but I want to share How to Organize Your Laundry Room this Spring.
Our laundry room is in the basement, need I say more. Mind you it is a finished, bright basement; however, everyone now has a first or second floor laundry room, and I covet their spaces.
I wanted to make my laundry room a space you didn’t mind spending time in, not just for myself but for resale purposes. If a potential buyer loves the look/feel of the laundry room, maybe they won’t mind that it is in the basement. Maybe.
How to Organize Your Laundry Room
Okay, check out the entire space.
Our laundry room was a typical laundry room with cheap baskets that did not keep my clutter pretty.
When considering how to organize your laundry room, keep in mind what you use the entire space for and who uses it.
In other words, our laundry room not only houses detergent and softener, but, it is where I keep our household tools, my crazy supply of sample paints, cleaning supplies, and it’s my husbands locker room to his cycling clothes and gear.
Secondly, I live with three boys. Okay, two boys and my husband and I always keep them in mind when designing in my own home. I don’t want extra girly foo-foo type decor because I have men in my home. I want everyone to feel comfortable. I am also very lucky that my husband does a lot of laundry. Literally, I think it is 60 / 40. He does 60% of it weekly (his office is right next to the laundry room so he is kind of stuck doing it). Since, he spends a lot of time helping me with laundry I wanted to make sure it was somewhat manly.
Okay, so check out this before image
Nothing special. Before beginning we had the walls painted Wedgewood Gray by Benjamin Moore, the floor painted Cement Gray by Benjamin Moore and installed a new elfa shelving system, the old one was all rusted and had extra long, tall shelves that created a loss of storage.
Here are pictures with thew paint colors but we still had a organization problem.
How to Organize Your Laundry Room
I knew I needed containers that would stand the test of time in what is the war room of a laundry room. When I walked into World Market I searched for Laundry Storage and found so many fantastic options that fit my criteria;
1. Manly
2 . Sturdy
First thing I grabbed was the rolling hampers. They reminded me of laundromats. I grew up in a Chicago high rise and I loved playing with the rolling hampers in the laundromats. This totally took me back two decades.
Next, I needed some type of shelving storage for our elfa system. We all have detergent bottles in our laundry rooms, but in all honesty, they are ugly AND we never remember when we run out of detergent since we can’t see inside the bottle. I needed something staring me in the face when we are running low on detergent. So, I grabbed two JUICE DISPENSERS for our detergents! Oh yes I did and I love it! Now, I made sure to use a liquid dispenser with a large opening and a spigot I could easily clean the soap build-up out.
You might be wondering what is in the containers. One dispenser has free and clear detergent, the other is woolite for my dark clothes, and the middle container is our penny jar. We always find change in the laundry room. I thought, why not collect it, and when the jar is full the kids can take it to the bank.
Okay, now I needed baskets or containers for my stuff. You know, the rags, cleaning supplies, the “smalls” I call them. I also needed them to be “short” cause I wanted to add a lot of shelves, and if they were tall, I lose shelf space. After walking around World Market we spotted these office storage caddies.
I KNOW!!! Who would have thunk it! I just love them and so does my hubby.
Also, it isn’t technically a shelf but we have this window ledge that my hubby would just throw his cycling stuff on, oil for the tires, his cycling watch, and some other “cycling stuff.” When I spotted this metal caddy I knew it would be a perfect fit. It has a spot for all his stuff that he can easily just grab and go.
Okay, we got the shelves sorted out and now I have the wall space to tackle. You can always place a Wall Storage unit above your sink. It is the best space for a wall unit when it comes to washing with stain removers, linen sprays or other items that can drip.
When I finished the laundry room my husband came down and he literally said, “I LOVE it!” Now, that doesn’t happen often, cause frankly, he doesn’t notice much when it comes to home decor. When I got his reaction I knew it was a win.
Here are more pics of the space, and happy Spring Organizing!
This is my multi-purpose craft-gift wrapping-sewing-tool-ironing wall. I use the ironing board (BTW the ironing cover is a World Market find) not just for ironing, but for gift wrapping, sewing and all other projects.
The two bottom shelves store the overflow cleaning supplies and my crazy sample paint selections.
