I have always had a healthy obsession (okay, maybe not healthy) with faux bamboo chairs. I scored my first vintage bamboo chairs 3.5 years ago at a garage sale for $10. Yeah, I said that right, $10. It needed a good sanding and paint job. I have been using it as a desk chair ever since. Want to find our how I scored this beaut of a faux bamboo Chippendale style chair click on it’s picture. FYI: it was painted black and then a satin white that I now love.
Anyhoo, this takes me to the dining room. I do host many gatherings/dinners and we just don’t seem to have enough chairs with our current table. The table is HUGE so we are not replacing it any time soon. However, I could only fit three chairs on each side because the chairs were HUGE. I decided to sell the chairs and start my search for 8 faux bamboo side chairs.
Bamboo Chairs
Yeah I know. I could just go to Ballard Designs and purchase 8 bamboo side chairs for $2,396.
But there were a couple issues I had with that…
It would be TWO THOUSAND THREE HUNDRED AND NINETY SIX DOLLARS!!!
Second issue, I have seen these chairs in person and they feel and look like fake wood, as is, almost plastic. The quality is just not there.
So, began my search.
I knew I wanted real wood build with a faux bamboos style. I knew I didn’t care the color cause I could change that. I also knew they needed to be genuine vintage chairs for reason of quality and craftsmanship.
I was on day three of my online search and it popped up. Bob King Auctions. I follow them on craigslist cause I know they carry a lot of restaurant items and you never know when you will have a client that needs that Shelby Williams round vintage table. I got giddy, and when I clicked on the link, there they were, my new babies. OVER 40 in fact at their auction site. Bob King was selling off faux bamboo Chippendale side chairs at $65 a pop.
Well, you can believe me I jumped in my car at 6:00a.m the next morning and did the loooooong drive out west.
When I arrived I was first on the scene and got to sort through over 20+ chairs to find 8 that were in perfect condition. Many were missing parts, broken, cracked, and beyond my own repair. But I was able to score 8 perfect faux bamboo chairs for less than $200 total!!! The staff there was great and with the chairs taking up too much room, and the time I spent sorting out the broken chairs I got each for just under $20. Yes, you read that correctly, $20.
BOO YAH!!!!
Stay tune to see how I transform these beauties. In the mean time, no matter what style home you have, I believe every home needs at least one genuine Vintage Faux Bamboo chair, which is why it is my Monday Must Have.
Your top places to score these are craigslist, ebay, estate sales, garage sales and Chairish
