For the last 3 months (okay, why lie, since I found out I was having a little girl) I spent time preparing her retrieve.
Now, why a retrieve? Cause I have a home full of testosterone. If you don’t know us personally, we spend every waking moment in manly activities. A literal sample of our weekend:
Saturday:
7:15am leave for early bird Hockey conditioning
7:50-8:50a.m. Hockey conditioning
9:00-9:30 Commute from Hockey to Soccer Game for child #2
9:30am-10:30am Soccer Game #1 for child #2
10:30-11:00/1:00 (maybe a little longer or maybe overlapping and mommy carpool begins) leave to or be at Hockey Game for Child #2
2:00-3:00 Swim team practice for Child #1 and Child #2
Sunday:
9:00am Sunday school (okay not gender specific) for Child #1
then 10:30-1:00 Travel Hockey game for Child #2
1:00-4:00 at some point Daddy has his Basketball Game (daddy league basically)
and at some point there is a possible last minute travel soccer game for child #1 or “ice time” at the local ring, so our boys, apparently, wont forget how to skate on their 1 day off.
Now, with that schedule said, I don’t want to tell you that golf, tennis and observing “live” games at the stadiums are not included here, basically, because it is off season.
Well, you can only imagine that I have had my fair share of male related sports and event. When I heard I was having a little girl–I jumped into gear.

Granted, my Little Lucy might end up with a full ride scholarship to Cornell playing Ice Hockey, but until then, I get to dress her up and decorate her room!!
Having a little girl on the way I decided to give her room what I had always envisioned.
If you follow me, you know I am not a “pink” type of gal and I didn’t want my little Lucy to be either. When I was little I watched, read and dreamt of Punky Brewster. I always wanted to dress like her and have a room that stood out like her bedroom. But, society stopped me. I was scared what my young peers would say if I wore to different colored shoes or if my room looked a little funky. So I held back.
Well, not going to let that happen to Lucy. From her room to her clothes I want her to feel confident in one purple sock and one blue sock. I want her to know that floral is not the only design but geometric’s ROCK!
With all that, I also wanted to teach her to REUSE, REPURPOSE and REDECOR! no way was I going out to the stores and buying all new decor for her room. We would bring family history and hand-me-downs into it all. Thrifty Keki!!
Thanks to family history and I was able to complete Little Lucy’s room.
I have had a successful year in helping clients re-design their homes with Thrifty History (antiques, vintage with a twist of modern) and I am glad I was finally able to put something together for Lucy using my design model as I do for all my clients.
The main piece, The Rug: Thank you Pancho and Mary for the beautiful rug. I am very proud to have Great Grandpa Cannon’s history in the room. I even joined Ancestry.com after I got this rug to find history about Mr. William Henry Cannon from Peru via Baltimore via Ireland. It has been a nice journey to learn. Amparo and Mary, I will tell Lucy the history behind this rug and I am sure she will carry it on. This rug was the design inspiration for the room. I took the blues and the hint of pink from the rug to begin her space from the paint colors to the art work and more. This rug was manufactured in Peru over 35-40 years ago where Lucy’s great grandfather worked and here it lies in My Daughter’s Retrieve:
My favorite color being blue and chartreuse (and the boys asking for NO PINK) I used my mom’s needle point art piece of Noah’s Ark to bring out the Chartreuse and matching blues from the rug into other parts of the room; the drapery and accent pieces. This needle point was also made between 30-35 years ago.
I was able to also have my old swivel chair from my room growing up. When I was 13 my mom asked me what I wanted for my birthday. I told her no party, I just wanted to decorate my own room. She let me, with custom drapery and furnishings and all. (BEST MOM EVER). Well, of course it was Laura Ashley time period, hence the chair. But, this added the feminine floral touch with all the colors of the room. I was able to pull some of the lite pink out in the pillows to add to Little Lucy’s rocking chair.
Thank you Mary for passing onto Lucy your mothers rocking chair. This chair is over 100 years old!!! A little Irish/German history. My mom, with my overbearing guidance for perfection, spray painted it white while I was pregnant.
I later made throw pillows and a seat cover with geometric shapes but same color scheme to match the room decor.
In the end, I love that Little Lucy has a room full of family history with a twist of the modern little lady that she might be.
